There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is against the law. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing capital accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel complex that features a number of luxuries in addition to the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
